Putting America back on Sound Economic Footing
Posted by on July 20, 2011
If the President and Congress are serious about reigning in our national debt and putting America back on a sound economic footing for the future, it comes down to three little words: cut, cap, and balance.  Washington doesn't have a taxing problem, it has a spending problem.  It really is that simple.

AGREED. The 4 trillion of cuts over the next 10 or so years is a joke. If you can write a law to spend it you can write a law to not spend it. I truly hope you can accomplish this task. It is just that simple.

Judging by the way President Obama spends money, I doubt if he has a clue on how to budget or cut spending especially when the money belongs to others. It's obvious he knows only how to spend, spend, spend! Take a look at his vacation and travel expenses. Does anyone take a look at the costs of running the White House under his presidency as compared to other presidents? Surely, the House and Senate has some who have access to financial auditors who can straighten this mess out I have been disappointed in the way the House Speaker has caved in to Obama. I do not believe anything President Obama says. What is in writing is different from what he says.

If Jeff Miller and the Republicans fail to compromise with Obama there is a good chance our country may default. If that happens I, and millions of other Americans who have worked all of their lives and paid their social security taxes may not get their social security checks. Personally I don't want Jeff Miller or anyone else playing Russian roulette with my security. If our country needs to raise taxes to met its responsibilities then for our sake raise taxes. Most of the wealth in this country is being invested in whatever brings the highest return, not what brings the most jobs to American workers. In George Bush Sr. and Juniors estimation it is the Global Economy, not the American Economy that matters and the American worker has been left out of the equation by the Republicans and Jeff Miller and his buddies could not care less.

Do NOT compromise with the President. This will only allow for changing the game again in just a little while. We have the chance to stop this madness now. There has to be a balanced budget amendment NOW. If congress and the president can't muster the fortitude to do the correct thing with the budget, we need a mandate that reflects the will of the people. DO NOT SPEND MORE THAN YOU HAVE COMING IN! And that isn't an invitation to tax me more. You have MORE than enough money stolen from the american people. Try to spend according to the constitution, stop trying to be all things to all people, and quit buying votes and favors with money that isn't yours. DO NOT COMPROMISE. The president and his cronies have no thoughts of complying with the will of the people. It is your job to force him to do it. So DO IT! The talk of default is a lie and everyone knows it. And since when did you get a good credit rating by constantly living off credit cards? Stop the stupidity NOW!!!!!

First, I am a republican. However, more significant, I am a member of the Silent Majority. Now, having established that, the Republicans are just as responsible for the wasteful spending as Democrats. The only difference between the two parties is what they want to overspend on. To me, cut, cap, & balance was only posturing by the extreme whacko right. It wasted precious resources that should have been expended on legitimate negotiations to find a resolution. You need to get your act together and join the effort to find a balnced solution to the debt problem that includes increased revenue (end the Bush era cuts for the wealthy and corporations), spending cuts, and (I feel) it would be great to have a balanced budget amendment. You need to hear me (silent majority) when I say to you that if you contribute to not getting a debt deal done by August 2, I will FIRE you next election. You know, I fully support all of President Obama's efforts so far on this. The Republican party is digging its own grave with this issue. If the Repulican party ends up being responsible for economic calamity caused by not finding a resolution, the Republican party will be relegated to the history books.

You always look at cuts to the entittlement programs but need to look at cut to the non entittlement programs. The disabled children receiving SSI and living with parents should have the cash assistance cut severly and be given Medicaid for medical needs. They should not be paying felons. The laws for SSI need to be rewritten. In the 1970s when the states administered it only included the blind, disabled and elderly. It is true government spending does need to be cut and the people of great wealth shoud be paying more taxes.

Congressman Miller, I DO NOT BELIEVE in cut, cap, and balance. You and all those who organized this vote wasted time and my tax money by passing this. The United States government is not a corporation and we cannot operate like a corporation. We do not go out of business and we do not make profit. I do not believe that wealthy America's should not have their taxes raised; I do not believe that corporations should not have their taxes raised. I paid a lot in taxes last year, but your are telling me that these big corporations who make billions of dollars each year should have a tax break and continue to utilize tax loop holes to pay a minimum amount of taxes (one whom did not pay any taxes last year)? These are the same corporations who are raising the price of goods while they make record profits (big oil). This is just wrong! For once, look out for me, the middle class American and raise their taxes, close the loopholes, and do what is right for me, the middle class working man. A Hard-working Citizen Marvin Fisher

No, Washington has a GOVERNING problem. The previous "last minute" crisis passing the FY-11 budget was bad enough but if you fail now and allow the country to default - tarnishing, maybe even destroying, the work, faith and credit we've created over the last 235 years - it will be an unforgivable sin. I voted for you before but if you can't or won't figure out how to do your job as a member of the party that is running the House while representing the 1st District, I will vote for someone - ANYONE - else during the next election. It really is that simple.

Congressman Miller: I know you will support the most conservative issues and vote accordingly at every opportunity. I feel that Washington is out of control and a worthwhile start would be for congress to cut it's bloated budgets by say 30% in expenses as a good faith start to reducing spending. Also necessary in my humble opinion is term limits for ALL elected officials. We have too many making congress a career which was never invisioned by our founding fathers. We need more interested in making America work like it did after WWII until recently; otherwise, we are doomed. Now is the opportunity to reign in excessive spending, bloated government budgets and make government more responsible to the people and not the lobby groups that support special interests and disregard the common taxpayer public. I do believe Cut, Cap and Balance is a start but only a beginning to real budget crunching cuts to get us debt free for the future. Thanks for your leadership in this crisis.

I trust that the President understands the severe need to cut wasteful government spending but I do NOT believe it is in our country's best interest to have overly deep spending cuts in areas such as education, health care, social security and any efforts that correlate to the creation of jobs. I think it is reasonable to expect all taxpayers, including the President and other elected officials, pay their fair share of taxes and it is ridiculous to continue having the least wealthy members of our society support the country's debt whilst the most wealthy get tax breaks and hire expensive accountants to find loopholes that lower their household and business taxes. I can only pray to, one day, wind up in the fortunate circumstance of making over $250,000 and being taxed accordingly for my fair share. Even if I were taxed at 50%, I would still be bringing home significantly more than I make today. Despite making a decent living today, it still sounds quite reasonable that as my income grows, my contribution to this country's revenue grows respectively. Congressman Miller, I implore you to represent the best interests of your country and your constituency and vote alongside our President for a balanced, bipartisan approach to the budget and economy.

What measures are you doing to get the bill passed before the everyday government employees suffer because the GOP is unwilling to compromise with the spending cuts and not taxing the wealthy and large businesses with their fair share? I don’t agree with having a staggered tax rate just tax them as much as you tax me the middle class American. Just cut everything to include the entitlement reform, automatic pay increase to politicians, and support to NON-Americans and those that are on unemployment for more than 12 months

Representative Miller, My family just moved into your district from Maryland and I would like to urge you to drop the cut, cap, and balance nonsense. It is DOA, and in my opinion if the Speaker continues to advocate for this and the balanced budget amendment at the insistence of a radical faction of the party, he and those that support it will find themselves unemployed following the 2012 election. I see in a cursory read that you are a strong supporter on America's veterans. I am a disabled vet and appreciate your efforts to take care of us. I will be examining your position on other issues to see if you can earn my vote.

Sir; Your active support for raising the federal debt ceiling is needed. Pensacola has been through a lot, given the effects of the oil spil, obligations on your military population and more. You have especially close knowledge of veterans' issues and the need to support our superb VA health care system. Our economy, and especially the Panhandle's, cannot grow without federal economic stability. Previous blogger, Mike, is correct that both political parties share spending responisbilities. Character assasination toward the President and other vitrolic caterwalling -- by anybody -- produces only division and delay. Please use your leadership position in the Republican caucus to stop it and move forward. (Keep in mind, the electoriate can easily be reminded that the current administration inherited a Republican admisitration deficit spent down from a Democrat surplus.) I was represented by Congressman Barber Conable (who risked reelection by staying in Washington to vote contrary to what the majority of his constituency wanted because he thought it was the right thing to do) and Senator Kenneth Keating. The people of their districts trusted and still admire both. Would either accept such ascerbic behavior from junior party members? We need you to be as great now. Thank you.

Truly disappointing. No entity, whether government or business, can continue to exist while spending more than it takes in. Not sure where the idea originates that leads to the belief that any entity can accumulate unfathomable amounts of debt with no end in sight. The work of the House of Representatives over the last weeks ending with the 29 July vote yields nothing but more debt. Those of you posting about default, do you think that raising our credit limit on our nation credit card will result in prosperity? Does the purchase of a $500,000 house on an annual salary of $43000 lead to future fiscal stability for a NW Florida family? If not then how will raising our national credit limit to above $15 trillion dollars lead to national prosperity? John Maynard Keynes is long dead. We are living proof that his famous theory is as dead as John. Joseph Stalin and Chairman Mao are dead. The massive growth of the administrative state fathered in this country by Woodrow Wilson has led to an economy that resembles Joe’s and Mao’s and is killing our nation. Our national economy is flat lining. Time to find a new model.

yes you people want to cut social security that we paid into and you all spent it on other things. It should have not been touched. Bush got us int this mess. He had the spending habit. You all need to get together and get this settled . Not by hurting the poor. These poor people cant even afford gas to get to work because the pay dont go up but gas, food, and taxes do. Quit helping these other countries and illegals get free everything and help the homeland first. Its all about getting the rich richer not helping those in America who really need it. My grandaughter cant even get an mri because medicaid will not help her. She is not asking for money for drugs or for help because she is an illegal she just needs to get an MRI because she has tumors. But we will give food stamps to young illegals without a question. We need to take of our people that really need it first. Sincerely, Connie Wolfe Quite acting like babies and get together for the good of our country.

sure! tax the rich(30 million small business owners that provide 53% of jobs in America& are responsible for 70% of jobs created in the last decade) & corporations(other 38% of jobs), then there will be no revenue/taxes coming in & nobody will get anything from govt welfare programs. we are already sending jobs overseas because we have the next to the highest corporate tax rate in the world(Japan is #1), small business/corp do not want to invest right now bcuz it looks like Obama & dems are gonna force a collapse of economy & force their socialist/marxist utopia=the destruction of America

Mr. Miller, I guess it was more politically expedient for you to go along with the GOP machine than for you to stand on your self-professed principles of "cut, cap & spend, right?

I live in your district. I see this site is called a BLOG but I see no personal blogs from you on this site. I have a question for you and I would appreciate your blog (comment). How do you stand on term limits for Congress, I see that our Senator Rubio is a co-sponsor with Sen Demint on a bill to establish term limits in Congress.
